Some moments come and go in a blink of an eye. However, some are remembered forever. The moment has finally come upon us for Roger Glenn Faidley. His candle blew out May 5, 2013. He is survived by his 3 siblings, his wife of over 40 years, 3 children, 8 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren.

Roger grew up in Colfax, Iowa and had the privilege of traveling the whole United States of America multiple times. His final destination landed him in Washington state where he enjoyed his freedome to the max.

Roger joined the United States Air Force July 5, 1965 and after completing his tour of duty returned home to Colfax, Iowa. He saw his life as a journey and one worth exploring. The Blues, trade fairs, family, road trips, and sticking out his thumb were a way of living life to the fullest for him. There was a glow in his beautiful, blue eyes and fight in his will to always move forward.

Roger will join his Mom, Mary Bell Faidley, and his Father, Ken Glenn Faidley in Heaven. He leaves behind many untold stories and another joke left unsaid.

There will be Celebration of Life event on his Birthday, May 18, from 1 p.m. until sunset. The address is 420 East 6th Street North, Newton, Iowa, 50208. BBQ, drinks, music and remembrance to be shared by all. Family and guests are welcomed to bring a dish, drink or dessert, but most importantly themselves.

Forma funeral services will be held Sunday, May 19, at 1 p.m. graveside at McKeever Cemetery in Colfax, Iowa. It is past the McDonald's going away from downtown Colfax a couple miles on the left. Obituary: Richard Poston

A celebration of life for Richard Poston will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, April 27, at the American Legion Post 111 in Newton.

Military honors will be conducted by the Post 111 Honor Guard.

Mr. Poston was a Korean War Veteran, a past Post Commander, current Vice Commander and long-time Honor Guard member.

Obituary: Ruth Huggins

A funeral mass for Ruth Huggins, 82, who died Sunday at Skiff Hospice, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton.

Visitation with the family will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.

Funeral services for Terry L. McVey, 54, of Colfax will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at the Howard Street Christian Church in Colfax.

Mr. McVey died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston.

Obituary: Richard A. Maddison

Funeral services for Richard Andrew Maddison, 85, who passed away at his home in Chariton on Feb. 26, will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, March 4 at Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax.

Visitation will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.

Those left to honor his memory are his wife, Hazel Jeanette of Chariton, daughter Nancy (Adrian) Zoutte of Chariton, son Kenneth Maddison of Hartford, son Dennis (Michelle) Maddison of Newton, his sisters Ruth Birkenholtz of Newton, Doris (Joe) Emerson of Colfax, Rosemary Lamb of Mingo and Bonnie (C.W) Weyers of Newton, along with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Mr. Maddison was born Dec. 13, 1927 to Andrew and Edith (Anderson) Maddison in Foster, Iowa. He attended Des Moines schools.

On Aug. 22, 1946, he was married to Hazel Jeanette Hunter in Woodland, Iowa. He worked a vareity of jobs including construction and packing plants before taking up farming, mostly in the Mingo and Derby areas, before retiring and moving to Chariton.

His favorite hobbies were fishing and cars.

Celebration of life gathering set for Terry Rose

A celebration of the life of Terry Rose, 60, of Kellogg, who died on Wednesday, will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Izaak Walton League in Newton.

Obituary: Masanobu 'Mas' Yoshinaga

In the blink of a camera flash, the remarkable life of Masanobu "Mas" Yoshinaga came to a peaceful ending on Friday, February 10, 2012. His passing followed 85 years of capturing cherished images and creating lasting memories on film and in the hearts of all who loved him.

A longtime resident of Newton, Mas died at the Veterans Administration Community Living Center (CLC), Des Moines. He fought lung and bladder cancer with unwavering strength, conceding nothing to the challenges of those illnesses. He was sincerely humbled and tremendously thrilled to participate with fellow World War II veterans as part of the 2010 Jasper County Honor Flight.

Mas was born on September 25, 1926, in Honohino, Hawaii, to Sonosuke Yoshinaga and Hama Abe, immigrants from Japan. He was gifted and graced with an endearing smile, kind soul, joyful spirit and amazing eye for nature's beauty.

Mas proudly answered America's call during World War II. He served as an interpreter in the Military Intelligence Service of the U.S. Army in Tokyo, Japan. He graduated from Grinnell College in 1951 and began working for his brother, Kaneichi (Konnie), who operated a longtime chick sexing business in Newton.

With a growing interest in photography, Mas joined the Tyler Studio, Newton, in 1957 and later purchased that operation. There, he dedicated himself to mastering the art of portraiture. Through his lens came hundreds of graduation, wedding and family photographs that remain prized keepsakes. In 1987, Mas relocated his photography business to the headquarters of Maytag Corporation, Newton, providing portraiture and general photography services to the company. He retired in 2007 as chief photographer to the organization.

Rather than return to his native Hawaii, Mas preferred Newton as his retirement home, enabling him to enjoy and appreciate the ever-changing seasonal snapshots and scenic elegance of central Iowa - the snow-covered landscapes of winter; blossoming flowers of spring; radiant summer sunsets; fiery hues of falling autumn leaves; and vivid rainbow colors that brilliantly overshadowed the darkest rainy days.

Away from his viewfinder, Mas filled days with reading at the library, playing tennis, walking and visiting with friends. He was an active member in the Japan America Society of Des Moines and excelled at water balloon yoyoing. Many friends were presented with his carefully crafted origami.

Those left to carry forward the virtues of a life well lived include his two sisters: Mitsuyo "Mitzie" (Saichi) Maeda of Hilo, Hawaii, and Fusako "Fusa" (Bill) Sugawara of Los Angeles, Calif.; a brother: Nobu (Bea) Yoshinaga of Honolulu, Hawaii; 10 nieces and nephews; and countless friends who will profoundly miss his enriching company, humble selflessness and his smiling eyes.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Momoye and Shigeko; and three brothers: Konnie, Kiyoto and Haruyuki.

Mas will be laid to rest at a family burial plot in Hawaii. Locally, a celebration honoring his life will held at a time yet to be determined on Sunday, March 11, at the American Legion Hall, Newton. Memorials in Mas' name will benefit the funding of future Freedom Flights for Jasper County veterans. Contributions can be made at the life celebration event.

Obituary: Mildred Nell Henderson

Mildred Nell Henderson was born August 4, 1920 in Monroe County, Iowa. She was the daughter of Guy and Josie Esther Ward Roberts. She died November 5, 2011, at her residence in Newton, Iowa at the age of 91.

She attended Enon Country School and graduated from Moravia High School in Moravia, Iowa. She taught in rural schools for two years. She lived most of her life in Allerton, where she enjoyed many friends and community activities.

She was united in marriage to Murl LaVaughn Henderson on July 30, 1940. Their marriage was blessed with two sons, Richard and Dale.

She and her husband, Murl, were entrepreneurs and in earlier years together operated a restaurant in Allerton. In 1968 they purchased the NuWay Cleaners in Corydon. After Murl's death Mildred continued to operate the cleaners until the age of 87. In earlier years, Mildred also sold Minnesota Woolens and Tupperware. She also worked in the kitchen at Allerton Community Schools.

She is survived by her sons and their families, Richard and Fran Henderson of Newton, Iowa; two granddaughters, Amy Henderson of Amman, Jordan, and Sarah and Ron Urias of Newton, Iowa; and Dale and Karen Henderson of Rogers, Arkansas; one grandson, Eric and Jessica Henderson of Bella Vista, Arkansas; two great-granddaughters, Hannah Boecker and Morgan Henderson and three great-grandsons, Gavin Urias, and Carter and Reid Henderson. One sister, Deena Steinbach of LaSalle, Illinois, also survives her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Murl, her parents, one sister, Margarey Tillotson and five brothers, Hilbert, Keith, Burdell, Gerald and Wendell.

Celebration of life will be Wednesday, November 9, at 10:30 a.m. at the Randolph Funeral Home in Allerton, Iowa. Memorials in Mildred's name may be made to Allerton First Responders.

Obituary: Rodger Vonk

Funeral services for Rodger Vonk will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wallace Family Funeral Home, 1115 E. 19th St. N., in Newton.

The family will greet friends from noon to 2 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service.

Vonk, 53, died Friday following a fall at the Colfax Sale Barn.

Obituary: Ruth A. Bak

Ruth A. Bak, 74, of Newton, Iowa, previously of Spirit Lake, Iowa, died on Sunday, Sept. 18, 2011, at Careage of Newton.

The daughter of Marguerite (Stokesbery) and Clayton Babcock, she was born May 2, 1937 in Mason City, Iowa and spent her childhood in Garner, Iowa. A graduate of Spirit Lake High School in 1955, she married Borge Bak in Spirit Lake in 1959.

She is survived by her six children; Dennis (Cheryl) Bak of Billings, Mont.; Julie Bak (Pete Hussmann) of Newton, Iowa; Dana (Linda) Bak of Apple Valley, Minn.; Wendy (Bob) Shafer of Roanoke, Virg.; Dale (Julie) Bak of Phoenix, Ariz.; and Trudy (David) Schumacher of Sioux Falls, S.D.

Also surviving are three sisters, Delores Metcalf, Joan Post and Jani Galloway; and two brothers, Jack Babcock and Paul Babcock.

She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, Ryan and LaShalle Bak of Billings; Corey Bak of Des Moines and Noah and Zane Hussmann of Newton; Miranda and Katie Bak of Apple Valley; Libby, Haley and Eagan Shafer of Roanoke; Bethany Bak of Orlando, Fla.; and Sara and Jack Schumacher of Sioux Falls.

She was preceded in death by her parents; step-father, Titus Menke; a sister, Marilyn Gouge; and a brother Don Babcock.

Memorials may be sent to the A-T Children's Project (www.atcp.org), a non-profit, tax-deductible organization working to find a cure for a rare genetic disease, ataxia-telangiectasia, that two of her grandchildren, LaShalle Bak and Zane Hussmann, live with.

No formal services will be held.

Visitation with the family will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton.

Aldridge, 81, died on Monday.

Gordon Greta, 64, the City of Newton's first full-time, in-house city attorney, died at Kavanagh House in Des Moines on Monday from complications of post-polio syndrome and myasthenia gravis.
