Jasper County Veterans Affairs and Jasper County Economic Development Corporation are joining efforts to host a Veteran Employment Opportunities Fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, June 20, at the American Legion Post 111, 1101 W. 4th St. S., in Newton.
The event is being held after a previously publicized "Hire Our Heroes" job fair that was to be held that same day at DMACC was cancelled by the event organizers, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation.
"Several of us got together and decided that there is no reason we can't do this ourselves," said Chris Chartier, veterans affairs officer for the Jasper County. "American Legion Post 111 Commander Wallace Schermerhorn has offered to host the event at no cost to employers or people interested in learning about local - and surrounding - career opportunities."
Chartier said Chaz Allen, executive director at JEDCO, has "worked diligently" on contacting local businesses who have an interest in hiring veterans and their family members. Several different education program providers, including VA Education and Vocational Rehabilitation Specialists, will also be on hand to discuss not only career opportunities, but educational opportunities that veterans may be able to access.
"There are men and women here who are ready and willing to work," Charier said. "Let's show them what great opportunities these local businesses are offering, while displaying the eager and competent workforce of our local community."
Current employer participants include the Iowa Veterans HOme, Skiff Medical Center, Heart of Iowa Regional Transportation Agency, Trinity Structural Towers, Walter G. Anderson, Rock Communications and JANCO.
