To help celebrate Valentine's Day, staff with the Newton YMCA and Jasper County Domestic Violence Alternatives/Sexual Assault Center will join people around the workd for "One Billion Rising," the largest day of action to end violence against women and girls.
The public is invited to attend the "One Billion Rising" event at the Newton YMCA at 1701 S. 8th Ave. E. in Newton.
The "Break the Chain" event will begin at 5:30 p.m. followed by Zumba at 6 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
Representatives from DVA/SAC will be on hand to provide information. The group will be accepting free will donations to help fund local services.
"One Billion Rising" began as a call to action based on the statistic that one in three women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, the equates to more than one billion women and girls. More information can be found on the organization's web site.
