Sen. Brad Zaun must really, really hate automated traffic control systems. On Wednesday, the Urbandale Republican introduced three measures that call for barring the devices completely, limiting the amount of fines that can be imposed and barring jurisdictions that use them from incorporating an administrative fee into the fine schedule and requiring that any profits accruing from their use go toward charitable causes.
On Thursday, he introduced another.
Senate File 44 would require that any profits municipalities gain through their use of automated traffic control systems would go to a new uninsured, hit-and-run and underinsured motor vehicle trust fund. Money in the fund would be used to reimburse insurers for claims paid under motor vehicle liability insurance policies.
Distracted Driving
Talking on your cell phone would be barred in Iowa under a measure introduced Thursday.
Senate File 33 would enhance current distracted driving restrictions to include use of a cell phone. A person could be cited with a simple misdemeanor for doing so.
