The city's Director of Administration Services tendered her immediate resignation from her long-time city employment on Monday just days after a city council committee voted to recommend that her position be eliminated.
Candi Van Zee resigned from her position following the Newton Employee Relations Committee's approval of City Administrator Bob Knabel's recommendation that her $93,500 position be eliminated at replaced with a non-director city comptroller position at a lower salary range.
The council committee also approved a recommendation that would create an executive assistant/city clerk position at a salary of $59,800. In making the recommendation, Knabel said Van Zee could be considered for that position.
Newton City Attorney Darrin Hamilton said today that new provisions in Iowa's Open Records law put into effect by state lawmakers this year "may preclude" the release of Van Zee's letter of resignation. He said news organizations' request for the letter are "under review."
The full city council has yet to adopt the recommendations of the Employee Relations Committee. If adopted, the new positions are scheduled to be put in place in November.
