A former Newton woman who has found success on the Des Moines restaurant scene was named the winner of the Iowa's Best Bite Restaurant Challenge.
Radio Iowa reported that Carly Groben won the national competition among 44 entrants that provides her with $35,000 in start-up cash and three months of rent free space in a building on Main Street in Grinnell.
Contestants were asked to submit videos explaining their dreams for a restaurant, as well as showing judges their cooking prowess and being interviewed by a panel of judges on their business acumen.
Groben, who hopes to have her new restaurant, Goldies, opened by Labor Day, previously owned Des Moines restaurants Proof and Flour Pizza.
Art a la Carte in Newton helped market the competition.
