The family of the late Kathrein R. Holkan recently presented Skiff Medical Center with a donation in her memory.
Holkan, who passed away at Skiff on June 8, had been a Med-Surg patient and shared with her family of how appreciative she was of the care she received while at patient at the hospital.
"She stated that every member of the nursing staff was wonderful," said Mary Swoboda, Skiff's chief nursing officer. "The family was also very pleased with the attention to their needs. They appreciated the special things the staff did to make them more comfortable."
Prior to her death, the family held a fundraiser in her honor and she requested that a portion of the money be given to benefit Med-Surg and its staff.
"She specified that she hoped the money could go toward the hospital's purchase of a special device known as a Sara Stedy," Swoboda said. "She had personally benefitted from this equipment, but knew that Med-Surg had had to borrow it from the Emergency Department."
The Sara Stedy device is part of a safe lift program that reduces the risk of injury for both staff and patients during standing and transfer. The equipment promotes patient support, encourages patient mobility and helps them stand alone.
The family's donation of $200 will go toward the eventual purchase of a Sara Stedy for the Med-Surg department.
