Two Newton High School students, Dani Peters and Leann Peterson, were this year's recipients of the Newton Noon Kiwanis' annual Arion Awards.
The Arion Awards are the oldest and most prestigious national award for outstanding achievement by high school musicians in band orchestra and chorus. Selection is based on the student's individual contribution to his or her musical organization, scholastic standing, musicianship, performing skill and demonstration of qualities in keeping with school standards.
The custom of bestowing valuable gifts to outstanding musicians dates back to the time of Arion, a legendary poet and musician who lived about 625 BC. Arion was one of the most popular musicians of his time and was showered with gifts where ever he traveled.
Peters was the recipient of vocal student Arion Award while Peterson was the recipient of the band student Arion Award. The Newton Noon Kiwanis presents the award each year to two Newton High School students.
