In an effort to promote bicycle safety and helmet use, the Newton Police Department has established the "Soft Cone for a Hard Head" program where students grades kindergarten through 12th who are observed wearing a bicycle helmet may be awarded a special coupon entitling them to a free soft-serve ice cream cone from a local business.
The program begins on Saturday and runs through the end of August. Those receiving a coupon will be able to redeem them at Cardinal Corner, Culver's of Newton and McDonald's.
Newton Chief of Police Jeff Hoebelheinrich says motorists, pedestrians and bicylists need to be mindful of each other, especially during the warm weather months. Since July 2010, he said, Newton has experienced 17 motor vehicle accidents involving pedestrians and two involving bicyclists.
"The Newton Police Department wishes all pedestrians and cyclists a safe and cool summer," he said. "Please help to ensure the remainder of the summer is safe and enjoyable for everyone by taking time to walk, bike and drive in a safe manner."
