Steve Hoffman, the Republican candidate for Jasper County Sheriff in this fall's election, announced on his web site that a former Jasper County Deputy Sheriff was the first place winner in his campaign raffle that featured an AR-15 rifle as one of the grandprizes.
John Guthrie was the overall winner and has the option of the rifle or a 50-inch flat screen television.
In 2000, Guthrie lost the Jasper County Democratic Party primary election to soon-to-retire Sheriff Mike Balmer. The next day he was charged with taking marijuana from a drug dealer's car and giving it to an acquaintance to sell. In November that year, he was acquitted of the charges. He said at the time he felt the charges were politically motivated.
