The City of Newton has been notified that it has been awarded a $25,000 grant from the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs to support repair efforts of the Maytag Bowl.
The Newton City Council and the Newton Historic Preservation Commission had endorsed the REAP/Historic Resources Development Program grant application earlier this year. The grant was competitive with 86 applicants in Iowa with only 26 being awarded any funds.
The grant application was headed by Newton Development Planner Erin Chambers.
"Ms. Chambers deserves considerable credit for the success of the effort," said Newton City Administrator Bob Knabel. "It is also notable that the City was only eligible for this grant because it had a Historic Preservation Commission (making the City a Certified Local Government) and because Maytag Park was on the National Register of Historic Places as a historic district."
The city plans to let bids for the next phase of improvements later this month.
