With Chaz Allen's pending departure as Newton Mayor due to his new position as executive director of the Jasper County Economic Development Corporation (JEDCO), the Newton City Council will soon be forced to decide on how it wants to fill the remaining 18 months of his term - either by appointment or special election.
One council member, however, won't be participating in that decision-making process due to his intention to seek the seat held by Allen for the past nine years.
Council member Mike Hansen said today that he plans to seek the Newton mayor seat by either method the other five council members choose to take. He said he plans to recuse himself from the vote on deciding which option to follow in filling Mayor Allen's unexpired term.
Hansen is currently serving his third, four-year term on the Newton council out of the city's second ward. He was appointed as mayor pro-tem by Mayor Allen eight years ago, a position he still holds.
No timeframe has yet been set on when the council might choose to proceed in finding Allen's replacement.
