Jasper County Chief Deputy Sheriff John Halferty today announced his intention to seek election to the office of Jasper County Sheriff in 2012 on the Democratic Party ticket.
Halferty's election announcement comes just days after Jasper County Sheriff Mike Balmer announced his intention to retire at the end of his present term.
Halferty, who was born and raised in Jasper County, has served in law enforcement for nearly 25 years. He started with the Newton Police Department in 1987 and served nearly 11 years with the department. In 1997 he was offered of a position with the Jasper County Sheriff's Office by former Sheriff Jim Verwers. In 2000, he was appointed Chief Deputy by Sheriff Balmer, a position he continues to hold.
"I have dedicated my life to public service and am ready to serve the citizens of Jasper County at the next level," he said. "I look forward to 2012 and will continue to work with and for the citizens of Jasper County."
