Another median cross-over accident on Interstate 80 near Colfax claimed the life of a Newton man on Wednesday.
Timothy Nelson, 59, was killed when his 2007 Chevrolet HHR was hit as it was traveling east near the 159 mile marker at 5:28 p.m. after a Wisconsin woman lost control of her westbound Chevy van, crossed the median and hit Nelson head-on.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, the van was driven by Fei Ma, 24, of Madison. She, along with passengers Samantha Greene, 25, and Nina Chaopricha, 30, both also of Madison, were transported to Methodist Hospital in Des Moines for treatment of injuries.
Both vehicles came to rest in the south ditch.
Nelson was pronounced dead at the scene by the Jasper County Medical Examiner.
The State Patrol accident report can be read here.
The Iowa Department of Transportation last year approved the emergency expenditure of more than $5 million to install 90 miles of cable barriers along Interstates 80, 35 and 380. Cable barrier is planned to be installed the entire length of Jasper County after a number of median cross-over accidents last year resulted in numerous motorist deaths.
