The possibility of selling the UAW Local 997 union hall building will be discussed by the membership during meetings set today.
The Newton Independent has learned the topic will be brought up as a possibility due to the lack of financial resources to keep the building operational.
Built in 1955, the building at 1813 1st St. N. has a current assessed value of $219,350, including the more than one acre of lot area. It's current tax bill is $9,052.
The local UAW membership fell significantly following the closure of the Maytag plant in Newton. Other UAW organized local operations include Thombert and Vernon.
The Newton Independent will follow this story and provide updates as information becomes available.
