Iowa Telecom and its employees will be presented the Greater Newton Area Chamber of Commerce's newly re-launched Congeniality Award during a ceremony this afternoon at the company's headquarter's near downtown Newton.
The executive committee of the Newton Chamber re-launched the award in order to honor Iowa Telecom's significant community involvement prior to its merger with Windstream Corporation, which is slated to become official June 1.
In a press release announcing the award, Chamber officials said they wanted "to recognize, thank and show our gratitude and appreciation to Alan Wells, president, chief executive officer and chairman and to his entire Iowa Telecom team before the merger took place."
"We thank Iowa Telecom and greatly appreciate your Newton Chamber membership and for your immense support of our organization and our entire community for many years," the release states.
"Normally, the 'Congeniality' award is given to an individual community hero. However, in the case of Iowa Telecom, there have been so many great Iowa Telecom employees that have volunteered, worked on different projects, have donated time, gifts and talents and supported our organization and entire community in so many different ways.
"Iowa Telecom, the company, and Iowa Telecom, the people, have remained dedicated and committed to the growth and betterment of the greater Newton area for more than a decade.
"Iowa Telecom and its employees have not only made financial contributions to a wide range of Newton-area events, such as Relay for Life and organizations like the Jasper County United Way and Progress Industries, but the volunteerism of Iowa Telecom employees has been unmatched. Many civic events, including parades, festivals, concerts, disaster relief efforts and other major productions are likely to have several, or even dozens, of volunteers from Iowa Telecom working behind the scenes.
"Iowa Telecom took on the daunting (and sometimes controversial) challenge of updating and renovating the Maytag headquarters into an open courtyard and business development facility, and has never forgotten its strength - local service and local participation. Again, thank you to everyone at Iowa Telecom."
