Wes Enos, the 29-year-old former political director of Republican Mike Huckabee's 2008 presidential campaign, is vowing an agressive run for the Iowa Senate District 21 seat currently held by Sen. Dennis Black, D-Lynnville, focusing on job creation and fiscal restraint.
"I am running for the Iowa Senate because our state needs to focus on jobs and economic development growth," Enos said in a press release issued this afternoon. The Bondurant man filed his nomination papers with the state on Monday.
"Iowa's business climate continues to lag behind the rest of the nation and its neighbors in the Midwest. The next Iowa legislature must be willing to work diligently to ensure that Iowa's business climate improves. I am committed to developing a business climate in Iowa where the private sector is allowed to grow and create sustainable jobs for Iowa families."
Enos said voters of the 21st District, which includes nearly all of Jasper County and the southeast corner of Polk County, have become concerned about the "explosive growth" of government, taxes and spending in Iowa. He said due to the "irresponsible spending habits" of Gov. Chet Culver and Democratic lawmakers like Sen. Black, Iowa faces a budget deficit.
"Like most Iowans, I am upset with the unprecedented levels of spending that has lead to record deficits, continued increases in property taxes and the budgets that do not reflect the true priorities of Iowans," he said in today's campaign announcement. "As senator, I will only vote for responsible and fiscally sustainable budgets that reflect Iowa's priorities and keeps our taxes low."
Enos said he offers an "optimistic message of a brighter future for Iowa, something in "stark contrast to the out-of-touch record of Senator Dennis Black, which has spanned nearly three decades."
A native of Altoona and graduate of Southeast Polk and Grand View College, Enos is a member of the Republican Party of Iowa's State Central Committee representing the 3rd District. He is currently employed as a business manager and independent political consultant.
"I feel it is my duty as community leader, husband and Iowan to do everything I can to bring about fiscal responsibility, help create jobs, protect the taxpayer and stand up for our children's education," he said. "I look forward to working hard to bring my optimistic message and grassroots campaign to every voter in the district as we all work together to bring about a new direction for Iowa and a brighter future for our children and grandchildren."
