Three Polk County Republicans will face off in the June primary for a chance to challenge long-time Jaspser County Democrat state lawmaker Dennis Black in the November election for the Senate District 21 seat.
Michael Adams Jr., of Bondurant, filed nomination papers with the Secretary of State's office on Friday seeking office for the seat that encompasses nearly all of Jasper County and a portion of the southeast corner of Polk County.
Adams joins Republicans Wes Enos of Bondurant and Joe Pirillo of Altoona on the June 8 primary ballot.
Black, of Lynnville, is running unopposed on the Democratic ticket.
Longtime Newton Democrat state lawmaker Paul Bell will also face competition this November after Gabriel Swersie of Newton filed nomination papers on Friday seeking election to the House District 41 seat as a Republican.
Swersie filed his nomination papers on Friday, the final day the necessary paperwork was allowed to be filed for those seeking state office.
Bell filed nomination papers seeking re-election to the House seat earlier this month. Neither has opposition in the June primary.
