Cities and counties across the state are being urged to submit applications for federal block grant funds for projects that reduce energy use.
The Iowa Office of Energy Independence is seeking applications for projects that reduce fossil fuel emissions, reduce total energy use, improve energy efficiency and create and retain jobs.
The state has been awarded $8.6 million in federal Recovery Act funds to implement the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant program. The competitive funding process includes six project categories:
- Energy efficiency retrofits of existing facilities for nonprofit organizations and governmental agencies.
- Development and implementation of energy efficiency and conservation programs for buildings and facilities within the jurisdiction of the entity.
- Development and implementation of programs to conserve energy used in transportation.
- Development and implementation of building codes and inspection services, compliance, training and enforcement associated with such codes in order to promote building energy efficiency.
- Replacement of traffic signals and street lighting with energy efficient technologies.
- Development, implementation and installation on or in any government building of onsite renewable energy technology that generates electricity from renewable sources.
