Iowa Gov. Chet Culver stopped in Newton today to tout his I-JOBS infrastructure improvement program and its benefits to local communities in helping offset the national economic doldrums.
Speaking at the Jasper County Courthouse, Culver noted Newton's rebound since the loss of Maytag with the establishment of two wind energy companies in the community, TPI Composites and Trinity Towers, makers of wind blades and structural towers, respectively.
"No one knows resiliency like Newton," Culver told those attending his stop in Newton as part of his three-city east central Iowa tour, noting the problems the community has faced since Whirlpool shut down its Maytag facilities in Newton after acquiring the company in 2006.
