A jury was seated and testimony began Monday in the federal health care fraud trial of a Newton doctor.
Dr. Angel Martin has been charged with 31 counts of felony health fraud filed. The charges were brought against him by federal prosecutors following grand jury proceedings earlier this year. A two-week jury trial has been scheduled.
Dr. Martin is alleged to have overcharged health care program administrators Medicare, Medicaid, Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield of Des Moines, Principal Life Insurance of Des Moines and United Health Group of Minneapolis, companies that are identified in court documents as the "victims of the alleged criminal activity charged."
The jury was seated by noon on Monday with opening statements by prosecutors and Dr. Martin's public defense attorney given following the lunch break. Federal prosecutors called seven witnesses to the stand on Monday afternoon and entered several exhibits.
