Springboard Engineering in Newton will receive $150,000 in federal funds to finance research on a clean energy innovation project, Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, announced in a press release today.
The funding comes from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
Specifically, the press release notes, the funds will be used by Springboard, a company developed by a group of former Maytag engineers, for its research into a Smart Grid Controller for Non-Smart Household Electricity-Consuming Appliances. The research will focus on smart devices that would enable millions of existing appliances to connect with the Smart Grid. The device would reduce the need to expand the power generation infrastructure and reduce energy costs.
"Small businesses are an important part of Iowa's economy and many are leading the way in clean energy production and use," Harkin said. "Recovery Act dollars will allow local companies to grow and create jobs, while at the same time lowering energy costs for consumers and reducing carbon emissions."
