The Newton City Council will decide at its meeting Dec. 21 whether to move forward with plans of developing a dog park at Westwood Park.
The council heard a presentation from Parks Director Denny Slings on the plans put together by the Newton Dog Park Committee in hopes of establishing a dog park within the Newton park system.
Under the plan, Westwood Park, located on the east side of the drive leading to Westwood Golf Course would become home to the 1.5 acre dog park.
The development costs, estimated at $16,650, would be generated privately through fund-raising efforts of the Dog Park Committee. Costs include fencing and gating, installation of water to the site and placement of a fountain and hydrant, benches, waste disposal stations and parking stops.
Fixed monthly costs to the city through its development are estimated at approximately $35 a month for water usage and disposal bags.
City council members had some questions on parking paving costs and insurance liability. Those responses will be presented prior to the council's last regularly scheduled meeting of the year.
If approved, organizers believe the project could be completed by July 1, 2010.
