Mechanics liens totaling more than $280,000 have been filed against the developers of the Prairie Suite Hotel under construction near the Iowa Speedway.
Four central Iowa contractors are claiming outstanding bills on the project being developed by HNF Development, LLC of Newton totaling $280,687.08 and dating as far back as July. Three of the four liens were filed in Jasper County District Court last Thursday and Friday.
Contracting firms filing the liens on the Prairie Suites Hotel project are Kinzler Construction Services of Ames ($70,334.50), Sully Construction ($66,938.12), Warnick Inc. d/b/a Yeager of Newton ($122,048) and JH McKlveen of Prairie City ($21,366.46).
HNF Development, whose principles include Alan Halferty and Dave Fisher, is in the process of building a 42-room hotel adjacent to the Prairie Gas convenience store which closed last week. The projects are separate business entities.
In a press release provided to the local paper, Fisher, owner of the convenience store, said he is looking to sell the store "after two years of successful operation" to focus his efforts on the development of the hotel.
In June 2008, the Newton City Council approved a development agreement with HNF Development that included a $250,000 economic development grant and a minimum assessment of $1.5 million. The economic development grant was to be distributed in three segments: $87,000 upon start of construction, $38,000 upon reaching the halfway point and $125,000 upon completion.
