Iowa's population grew to more than three million people between July 1, 2008 and July 1, 2009, population estimates released by the U.S. Census Bureau today indicate.
Iowa recorded a total population of 3,007,856 as of July 1, up from 2,993,987 from a year earlier. The 13,869 increase amounts to a .5 percent gain.
The figures released today are the final set of Census Bureau population estimates to be published before the official 2010 census counts to be released next December.
"We are focused now on ensuring we get a complete and accurate count in 2010," said Census Bureau Director Robert Groves. "The census counts will not only determine how many U.S. House seats each state will have but will also be used as the benchmark for future population estimates."
Texas showed the greatest population increase (478,000) for the period with California remaining the most populous state at 37 million.
Wyoming showed the largest percentage growth with its population climbing 2.12 percent to 544,270.
Three states lost population for the period, Michigan, Maine and Rhode Island.
