The Iowa Power Fund recently approved a $3.8 million grant that will aid Elevance Renewable Sciences in adding technology to the Newton, Iowa biodiesel plant to turn feedstock oils and animal fats into specialty chemicals and jet fuels.
The state grant is in addition to a $2.5 million U.S. Department of Energy grant previously announced for development of the pilot project at the Newton plant.
Working in conjunction with Renewable Energy Group, the firm in the process of an asset purchase of Central Iowa Energy, the biorefinery will convert renewable raw materials largely sourced from Iowa into petroleum replacement fuels for use in such products as cosmetics, candles, solvents, adhesives, disinfectants and high performance motor fuels.
The Newton Independent previously wrote about the U.S. Department of Energy grant here.
A post on Elevance's blog gives more information on its plans for the use of various feedstocks.
