The Jasper County Compensation voted unanimously on Thursday to recommend that county elected officials receive no pay increase in next fiscal year's budget.
This will be the second consecutive year that Jasper County elected officials have not received a pay increase.
Prior to the meeting, the majority of county elected officials wrote to the compensation board asking that they assign no increase in their wages for the coming fiscal year. The recommendations made by the compensation board are forwarded to the board of supervisors for approval as recommended or across-the-board reductions. The supervisors may not increase wage rates for elected officials greater than the compensation board's recommendation.
"With the economy in the state that it is this year, I would request that I receive no increase in compensation for the 2010-2011 fiscal year," Jasper County Treasurer Doug Bishop wrote to the board prior to Thursday's meeting. "The elected officials have all worked hard to limit spending and increase revenues for the county. There will be future years that a wage increase will be more practical."
