The Newton Police Department and Newton Public Works Department are reminding residents that it is against the law to "push, blow, throw or shovel" snow from residential or business sidewalks and driveways onto city streets.
City officials state that putting snow back on a street that has already been cleared by street crews poses a hazard to drivers and reduces the effectiveness of efforts to salt and sand previously cleared streets.
Violation of the ordinance is a civil infraction carrying a minimum fine of $95.
And in a note from City Administrator Tom Wardlow to council members concerning the issue, he notes the city plans "to increase vigilance on improper snow removal practices including a closer working relationship between Public Works and the Police Deparment."
"Please help keep our city streets safe during hazardous driving conditions and only push, throw, blow or plow snow back on to your own property and not out on the city streets," said Jeff Hoebelheinrich, Newton's chief of police, in the release.
