The Newton Convention & Visitors Bureau will start a new grant program in 2010 aimed at assisting local groups in holding events that promote tourism and economic activity in Newton by bringing visitors to the community.
While the CVB currently provides a variety of promotional services and resources at no cost, the aim of the grant program is supporting groups that may need support beyond the office's standard services.
"The Newton CVB is anticipating there are a number of eligible organizations out there that want to sponsor an event or bring a group to Newton, but just don't have the funds to pull it off at this time," said Linda Bacon, executive director of the CVB. "We're hoping this will be another incentive for non-profits to take advantage of to help promote our community and is another way we can offer assistance to their efforts."
Bacon said the grant program will begin In January. The CVB plans to initially allocate $1,000 worth of grants over the course of the year with a maximum of $200 for each eligible applicant. Grants will be given based on their merits and the availability of funds. As the grant dollars are depleted, new applications will not be eligible for that calendar year.
The Newton CVB grant program guidelines and application will soon be able to be downloaded from the organization's Web site at www.visitnewton.comor by stopping by the office located at 113 1st Ave. E.
