A new high-volume, high-speed emergency notification system will soon be tested and deployed in Jasper County.
Called the Code Red Emergency Notification System, the program allows local emergency responders to provide geographic specific, customized emergency messages to area residents' land line and cell phone telephone numbers in the event of the need of a mass emergency notification. The system is capable of delivering approximately 1,000 calls a minute.
In a note to council members, City Administrator Tom Wardlow noted that Code Red representatives are nearly finished instructing dispatchers at the county's E-911 center on the data entry and usage of the system. Once finished, within a week or two, Emergency Management will go public with the program.
Wardlow told council members that the database (resident name, phone number, address) has been input for all of Jasper County. During the announcement and public education phase, an effort will be made to have residents log into the Code Red Web site to input additional information, such as cell phone numbers and alternate phone numbers, if desired. Residents will need to register their cell phone numbers because the numbers are not included in the original database.
A test is planned in the near future.
