The operation of the Newton Municipal Airport generates more than $2.2 million in total annual economic activity for the City of Newton and its environs, according to a new report released by the Iowa Department of Transportation's Office of Aviation.
The breakout of the Newton airport was part of a larger study that showed the economic impact of the air transportation industry in Iowa is estimated to exceed $5.4 billion while supporting more than 47,000 jobs across the state. This includes $1.5 billion in output fro on-airport activities and visitor spending, as well as $3.9 billion in output from off-airport aviation-related manufacturing.
Findings in the report for the Newton airport estimate its economic benefits include:

$2.2 million in total annual economic activity or output generated from the airport and its operation.

26 jobs supported by businesses, activities, capital improvement projects and spending by visitors who arrive in Newton via the airport.

$738,000 in annual payroll for the 26 employees whose jobs are linked to the Newton Municipal Airport.
Information pertaining to the Newton airport noted its classification as an Enhanced Service Airport by the DOT. These type of airports are capable of supporting most general aircraft, including business jets.
The report noted that Newton Municipal Airport has 18 based aircraft which includes two multi-engine planes. The airport accommodates and estimated 10,000 annual takeoffs and landings with an estimated 50 aircraft visiting the airport each week.
Primary uses of the airport include the Iowa Speedway through use by drivers, teams, vendors and fans; agricultural aviation activity, businesses in Newton's market area, medical transportation and other general business uses.
