TPI Composites announced late this afternoon that it is laying off 80 employees and moving to a five-day work week, a situation prompted by the sour economy and situations involving the start-up of a new plant.
In a statement released by Lavidge Company spokesperson Marcia Scott, the public relations firm working on behalf of TPI, TPI will shift to a five-day, 24-hour-a-day schedule from its current seven-day continuous work week.
"As a result, approximately 80 temporary associates will not be made full-time associates at this time as part of a reduction of the temporary workforce," the statement read.
Scott said an outside agency provides TPI staffing in Newton.
With the local workforce reduction, full-time employment at TPI, the make of wind blades at a new facility north of Newton, will drop to approximately 320 full-time and temporary employees.
In the statement, Scott said TPI remains optimistic that the layoff will be temporary.
"TPI remains bullish on a wind energy market rebound and still expects to meet, and possibly exceed, the 500 employee mark in Newton by mid-2010," the statement concluded.
