The son-in-law of Ron Foreman filed papers at Newton City Hall today asking that he be considered by the Newton City Council to fill the unexpired term of the former long-time council member.
James Klier, who is married to Foreman's daughter, Colette, is the second person to express interest in filling the term left open following Foreman's death in late June until the regular city election in November.
On Monday, Newton School Board member Sheri Benson filed papers with the city that she is interested in being considered for appointment by the council. Benson's term on the school board expires in September.
Individuals wishing to be considered for appointment have until 4:30 p.m. Friday, July 24, to file paperwork at city hall. The council hopes to make an appointment at its first meeting in August.
The individual selected would serve only until the November city election. To continue, the council appointee would be required to stand for election for the at-large seat and only serve the remaining two years of Foreman's term. Nomination papers for the general city election can be turned in to the city clerk from Aug. 24 to Sept. 17.
Four council seats, plus the mayor's position, will be decided in the November election.
