Donations will cover nearly half the City of Newton's cost of this year's belated fireworks display.
City Administrator Tom Wardlow said more than $3,100 has been collected to date to go toward the approximate $7,500 cost of putting on the display.
The Newton City Council was bombarded with complaints after residents realized the council's's cost-cutting measures for this fiscal year's budget included the elimination of funding for fireworks on the Fourth of July.
The council hatched a last-minute plan to use funding from the city's hotel/motel tax collections and private donations to finance a display. Due to the timing of the decision, the fireworks display had to be held on the day following Independence Day.
In coming years, the newly appointed parks commission has been charged by the council with establishing a committee to seek private donations for the Fourth of July fireworks - much like what is done for the annual courthouse Christmas lighting display.
