Lonnie White, a former UAW Local 997 president, is the latest Newton resident to submit his name for consideration of appointment to the Newton City Council seat left vacant due to the death of long-time council member Ron Foreman.
White joins Sheri Benson, James Klier, Richard Atwood, Raymond Sutton and Harold Martin in seeking appointment to the council until the November general city election. At that time whomever is selected by the Newton council at its Aug. 3 meeting will be required to either step aside or seek re-election to the at-large seat. The winner of the November election will be seated immediately to the council and serve the remaining two year's of Mr. Foreman's term.
On Tuesday, the League of Women Voters of Jasper County will hold a candidate forum to give residents a chance to hear from the candidates and pose questions. The event is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the council chambers at Newton City Hall. The event will be aired on cable channel 12.
Candidates interested in seeking appointment have until 4:30 p.m. today to file papers at city hall.
